Porto Cathedral – Lex Travels

Porto Cathedral

You could just spend your days walking around and never need to go into a museum. Every street has a church, from Gothic to Baroque and everything in between. Sightseeing is inexpensive here, a few Euros will grant entry to most churches and museums. There is always a free day or afternoon each month, so there is a way to see a lot without breaking the bank.

Silva’s Alterpiece

My favorite afternoon was spent in Porto Cathedral, one of the city’s oldest monuments. Originally constructed in 1147, it has gown over centuries into a hybrid of Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque. Flying buttresses, a crenellated arch and barreled vaulting are some of the unique features that make this cathedral so special. The Gothic cloister was built between the 14th and 15th centuries and was later enhanced in the 18th century with tiles depicting the life of virgin Mary and Ovid’s Metamorphosis. The chapels alterpiece, executed by Francisco da Silva is one of the most important works of the Portuguese Baroque style. Inside the cathedral’s adjacent building is an amazing museum containing a vast array of paintings, vestments, reliquaries and sculpture from early Gothic to the Baroque. You are also able to access one of the towers for the best view of Porto, the stairs are steep but worth the climb for the panoramic view of the city. It is the best 3€ you can spend in the city.
